I love how fluffy and cute the Alaskan Malamute looks. He’s the Siberian husky’s larger cousin. These dogs are descendants of wolves, and their name was given by the Northern tribe that raised and used them as sled dogs.
If you’ve never had a dog before, you should not start with an Alaskan Malamute. These pets need a lot of space, and their owners must have experience caring for and adequately raising this husky type.
Malamutes can live up to 14 years. As adults, they are 23-25 inches tall and weigh between 75 and 85 pounds. They’re agile, loyal, trainable, and friendly.
Chinook dogs aren’t your regular husky type. He doesn’t even look like a husky, but he’s also a sled dog. However, regarding husky breed characteristics, this one reminds me more of a labrador than a Siberian husky.
This husky breed is quite rare, although the AKC recognized it in 2013. Chinook is the result of a cross-breeding between huskies and Mastiff dogs. They are friendly and get along well with humans and other pets. However, due to their independent personality, this type of husky dog needs an experienced trainer.
Unlike other huskies, Chinooks have shorter hair. They’re great guard dogs, can also become fantastic rescue dogs, and are patient around children.
Alaskan Klee Kai dogs are energetic and intelligent. Nevertheless, they’re less active than regular huskies. Unlike Alaskan or Siberian husky dogs, Klee Kais are suspicious of strangers, so they’re effective watchdogs.
Unlike Malamutes, Klee Kais are tiny huskies with a smaller and lighter body. They’re the ideal companion if you’re searching for a more manageable pet. At adult age, these dogs weigh 15-22 pounds and are 15-17 inches tall.
Due to their intelligence and athletic figure, Klee Kais are amazing at agility sports. If cared for properly, they can live up to 16 years. The AKC has already recognized these curious and lively huskies.
White huskies are the rarest of their breed in terms of color. They’re stubborn yet affectionate, being great family pets. This husky dog loves to be around people and other pets. They’re large pooches with pure white coats. In contrast to a Samoyed, white huskies might feature blue eyes.
Please don’t acquire a white husky dog just because it’s rare and pretty. It’s so much more than just a cute pet! White huskies are quite high-maintenance; they need daily brushing because they shed more than other huskies. Also, like all other huskies, they thrive from daily training, exercise, grooming, and affection.
Eskimo dogs are protective and friendly. They come in three sizes and usually have a white coat. Although affectionate and loyal, be aware of their excessive barking tendencies.

The mini and toy versions can be great apartment pets. Despite their name, these huskies weren’t created by Eskimos. Instead, German Spitz dogs are Eskimo’s ancestors, brought to America by European farmers.
The standard size weighs approximately 18 to 35 pounds and is 15-20 inches tall. Mini Eskimo dogs are 12-15 inches, while toy Eskimo pooches measure only 9-12 inches.
Alaskan huskies are medium-sized working dogs. Compared with Siberian huskies, the Alaskan breed variety looks more slender and slimmer, with thinner fur. Their typical weight ranges between 35 and 55 pounds, while their life expectancy is 10-15 years.
I love how gentle, calm, cheerful, and loving these dogs are. They love being by your side and can start howling when left alone. The smaller brother of Siberian huskies was created from a mix of other breeds, including the Alaskan Malamute, Greyhounds, and German Shorthair Pointer dogs.
This husky type is less of a family pet and more of an athletic canine that loves other dogs’ companionship.
Samoyeds are one of my favorite types of huskies. I love how fluffy these dogs are, but I know how much grooming they require, mainly because of their long, thick white fur. Besides their lovely appearance, I also like these dogs’ upbeat personalities.
They’re devoted and outgoing, but you shouldn’t leave them alone for a long time. Otherwise, they might develop destructive behaviors. Other downsides are excessive barking, stubbornness, and heavy shedding.
Samoyeds are medium-sized dogs, reaching 21 inches in height and 34-55 pounds in weight. If I had a backyard, I would definitely consider getting one.
Unlike what you’d expect given its name, a Labrador Husky isn’t a hybrid dog created by breeding huskies with labradors. Instead, its genes come from Siberian dogs, Canadian Eskimo canines, Alaskan Malamutes, and Samoyeds.
Labsky pooches are great farm dogs, being powerful and agile. They have plenty of stamina and strength, along with intelligence and loyalty. You may consider their strong prey drive before getting this husky breed. As a Labrador Husky owner, you must establish dominance if you want your pet to remain calm.
Another concern would be raising them in a home with smaller pets, such as cats or tiny dogs. These are large animals that can weigh up to 100 pounds.
Sakhalin huskies are big and fluffy and go by Karafuto Ken. They’re intelligent, patient, affectionate, and loyal. However, don’t expect them to go out of their way to please you since they aren’t really into complying with people’s rules and demands.
They were bred in Russia. Unfortunately, this husky breed is almost extinct. While these dogs were useful to the Russian army during World War II, the soldiers decided to kill many Sakhalin dogs because of the high cost of keeping and feeding these pets.
It’s improbable for us ever to see this type of husky.
Japanese Akita Inus are my second favorite husky breed. Have you ever touched this dog’s fur? I have, and I fell in love with how it feels; it’s just like petting a high-quality, thick Persian carpet. My fingers almost got lost in all that hair.
From my experience, these dogs look and act majestically, but they have personality moods, and it’s hard to decipher them. They can live up to 12 years and weigh between 55 and 75 pounds. Despite them being prone to aggression towards other dogs, proper training might help.
Even though these dogs don’t bark too much, they’re very strong-willed.
American Akita dogs can be the perfect pet for the proper household and a caring owner. That being said, they might not suit inexperienced owners because of their unique grooming needs and large size.
They have bulkier bodies and are shorter than their Japanese counterparts. Their personalities are strong, and they love to be the dominant Alfa male in a group. Therefore, I would be careful when taking my Akita for a walk to the park, where he might fight with other dogs.
American Akitas are difficult to train, unlike regular huskies, but they’ll safeguard your home. I admire their dignified attitude.
Despite looking like a wolf and being a rather large dog, this husky type is very friendly and gentle. One thing they have in common with Alaskan huskies is their need for mental stimulation and physical activities.
Engaging with toys and long walks keeps them well-behaved. However, if you leave them on their own for a more extended period, they might develop separation anxiety. This husky breed is quite rare. Utonagan dogs need someone strong and capable of firm training.
Unlike other huskies, these aren’t sled dogs, but they can be loyal companions.
Also known as Pomsky, Pomeranian huskies are adorable. They’re the mini version of your standard husky dog, resulting from breeding Alaskan and Siberian dogs with Shiba Inus or Pomeranians.
Husky Inu dogs are also known as Siberian Shiba. This mixed breed isn’t officially recognized but could be a great addition to your family due to the dogs’ lively and social personalities. You must keep them active and engaged at all times. Otherwise, they might become bored and destroy things around your house.
Pomsky dogs are adorable and perfect for a smaller apartment, but they shed all year round, so daily brushing is absolutely necessary.
This husky breed originated in Northern Europe, specifically in Norway. Norwegian people used them to hunt moose. They’re brave and robust dogs that can live between 12 and 15 years and weigh approximately 48-55 pounds.
These elkhounds come with a thick double coat that requires regular grooming. This husky breed might be the right choice if you want a pet that can protect your household. Contrary to popular belief, these large canines behave well around other dogs.
They’re independent but require less physical exercise than other husky pups.
This spitz dog is a medium-sized husky with fluffy fur and a foxy face. As you can see from its appearance, this dog resembles Samoyeds, being fluffy. However, the Keeshond is far more trainable than Samoyed dogs.
Suppose you’re ready to dedicate a lot of time and attention to this husky pooch. In that case, you’ll love how affectionate it is and how fond it becomes of you as its owner. On that note, Keeshond canines don’t do well when their owners spend too much time away from home.
Agouti huskies originate from a type of wolf that resides in Russia and other Northern parts of Asia. They were domesticated and used as companions and sled dogs. Their blue or brown eyes are piercing. I’m describing a scarce husky breed that can grow 21-24 inches tall.
I love outgoing pets, and Agoutis are one of them, but they can also become destructive if they get bored. Still, this husky breed is friendly and non-aggressive, especially towards humans.
It might be the right dog for your home if you’re willing to brush its fur religiously and ensure it gets at least 1-2 hours of exercise per day.
A Shepsky dog is a cross-breed between Siberian huskies and German shepherds. Because of this, Shepsky dogs have excellent guard, search, and rescue skills. They’re also very affectionate and playful.
Their size and body weight are similar to those of a Siberian Husky. While these are highly energetic dogs, they can also become very cuddly with their owners. Whenever dissatisfied, Shepskies tend to become pretty vocal.
Although they might not have the longest fur among husky breeds, they shed a lot. You should consider that, especially if you have allergies.
These large husky dogs weigh up to 104 pounds and reach a height of 26-29 inches. They come in various colors, including sable, black, gray, blonde, red, white, and more.
MacKenzie River puppies are trustworthy, intelligent, dominant, and independent. Before the invention of snowmobiles, people used them as sled dogs. Despite their high prey drive, MacKenzie dogs make great pets. They share a gene with St. Bernards.
Canadian Eskimo dogs are among the most affectionate types of huskies. They’re always eager to please and protect their owners. At the same time, they’re also vocal and tend to bark a lot. Despite its name, this wolf-dog breed originated in Siberia.
The breed was almost extinct, but a revitalization project took place. Nowadays, you’ll find approximately 300 specimens registered at the Canadian Kennel Club. They’re also known as Canadian Inuit dogs, and their origins date back 4000 years.
As you can tell by their name, these pooches are a mix of huskies and pugs. I know this might seem like a quirky cross-breed for many people. This is a recently bred hybrid pooch that’s smaller than Siberian huskies.
It’s intelligent yet stubborn, but it’s great with children. It’s hard to define this husky dog’s traits since they vary greatly. Some have erect ears, while others have flat ears. Their tails can be curly or straight, whereas their fur is slightly longer than a pug’s coat.
Due to its size, a hug dog is an excellent apartment pet.
It all depends on what you want and prefer. There’s no such thing as the ideal husky breed. Each of them has its unique characteristics and perks. For instance, I love Siberian huskies, Samoyeds, and Akita Inus due to their robust and majestic appearance.
Before getting a specific breed, you should consider your pet-related experience, lifestyle, the size of your home, whether or not you have other pets, and whether you need a companion or a guard god.
Akitas, for example, make excellent guard dogs, while Keeshonds are perfect for first-time owners.
